The album was recorded in 1983 and results from a studio encounter between experimental electronic music composers CY1, Congolese musicianvocalist Bony Bikaye, and French composer Hector Zazou, with involvement by sound engineer Gilles Martin, Marc Hollander Aksak Maboul and Vincent Kenis the future creatorproducer of the Congotronics series. TigerTorakio Immersively atmospheric, hypnotically repetitive songs that doggedly walk the line that separates new wave from abstract sound sculpture. Here, dance is both entertainment and ritual. Always mysterious, a little spooky, yet joyous and life affirming. Favorite track: Lamuka. Noir et Blanc was released in 1983, yet it still sounds like a broadcast from the future. The work of Congolese and French musicians using analog synthesizers, strange effects, stranger time signatures, and acoustic instruments-steel guitar, clarinet, kalimba-and singing over them in Swahili, Kikongo, Lingala, and pidgin French, it reappears now not so much as a reissue, but as a boomerang across space and time. CY1, Bikaye, and Zazou would tour together, but the full group never put out another record theres nothing else in CY1s discography at all. The band lays a creamy and seductive ground for Bikaye, a singer possessed of a marvelously rich and deep voice with a tinge of sardonic humor. The music is convoluted and irresistibly funky, avoiding the clichés befalling many somewhat similar ventures from around this period 1983 even the drum machine usage works well. Hollander's clarinet and bass clarinet work adds a lush element not normally associated with this genre, giving an oddly European exoticism to what is essentially African music. ZazouBikayeCy1. Noir Et Blanc. PIAS, A Train Entertainment Masters от. 52: Bikaye CY1's 1983 album Noir Et Blanc - just reissued by Crammed Discs - is so ahead of its time, we haven't caught up yet. MPasi Ya MPamba, the first track on Hector Zazou and Bony Bikayes 1983 collaboration Noir et Blanc, sounds like few other songs in pop music history. It buzzes, hisses and clangs like vintage industrial, its groove something like a higher fidelity take on The Normals Warm Leatherette, or a t. Noir et blanc, 1983. ZazouBikayeCY1. His groundbreaking 1983 album Noir et blanc recorded with Congolese singer Bony Bikaye garnered a lot of international attention, and is widely recognized as one of the earliest and most impressive experiments in fusing African and electronic music. Zazou regarded his work during the 1980s as his time of apprenticeship in the studio
