Pianist Thelonious Monk's appearance with a tentet at a 1959 Town Hall concert was a major success. With Hal Overton contributing arrangements of Monk's tunes including a remarkable transcription of Monk's original piano solo on Little Rootie Tootie and solos provided by trumpeter Donald Byrd, trombonist Eddie Bert, altoist Phil Woods, Charlie Rouse on tenor, and baritonist Pepper Adams, this date was a real standout. The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall is an album by Thelonious Monk, originally released in 1959. When Thelonious Monk recorded The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall in 1959, his career was at a peak, no longer a sometimes derided outsider, Monk had finally emerged as a living legend, and a recognized leading architect of modern jazz. The concert, at which at Town Hall was recorded, received much attention because this was to be Monks first attempt at presenting his music in a big band format. To get help orchestrating his first big band album, Monk enlisted longtime fan and big band arranger, Hal Overton. The two worked painstakingly on several Monk originals before they called in a band for some rehearsals and then the concertrecording. At Town Hall. Thelonious Monk T. Monk Format: Audio CD. But oddly enough, I love the 1959 Town Hall Concert, in which Monk is part of a 10-piece band. I think it's something about the combination of Jay McAllister's tuba, Sam Jones' rubbery bass and the beautiful oddball baritone saxophone of Pepper Adams. Granted that the music in this album recorded in 1959 is not new in itself, the arrangements in it are different from your typical Thelonious Monk. He steps into big band-type territory, with the participation of a ten piece band, away from the 'more limited' standard four or five piece ensemble
