To listen to the Avalanches is to wrestle with time. The sample-rich music made by this group of Australian DJs makes you think about where its pieces come from, what those fragments meant to you then, and what they mean to you embedded into the group's finished songs. Theres nostalgia and loss ingrained in every bar, and you can sense the erratic movement of past, present, and future from the first listen. Speaking of time, theres also the fact that the Avalanches waited 16 years to follow up their debut album, 2000s landmark Since I Left You. To be a fan of the Avalanches, you had to. The Avalanches. Wildflower is a continuous mix of the wild and weird, another hallucinogenic collage of samples ranging from R&B to orchestral pop. From the calypso-klezmer Frankie Sinatra, featuring Danny Brown, to Biz Markie chomping over a Beatles sample on Noisy Eater, its the tour de force soundtrack to music's past and present. The group all but disappeared after their critically acclaimed 2001 debut album Since I Left You. What kept us going was a belief in the day-to-day experience of music as a life force

Mightsinger
Placing the focus on the music rather than the pressing issues I have to say I am really enjoying this album. It could never have been as groundbreaking as the first (time, technology and ideas move fast) but that aside there is a real joyous, psyched out musichall vibe running throughout this LP. For me this is a great example of listening to the album rather than individual tracks. As a single Frank Sinatra didn't really do much for me, however listening to it again as a part of the album I get it and am hearing something very different and enjoyable. This album has the sense of a Rotary Connection for the 21st Century and surely that can only be a positive.
