Marcus Garvey is the third album by the reggae group Burning Spear, released in 1975 on Fox Records in Jamaica and then internationally on Island Records later in the year. The album is named after the Jamaican National Hero and Rastafari movement prophet Marcus Garvey. A dub version of it was released four months later as Garvey's Ghost. This was the first album by the group recorded for producer Lawrence Lindo, better known by his handle taken from the assassin of Lee Harvey Oswald, Jack Ruby. Marcus Garvey hit Jamaica like a force ten gale, its legacy so great that in later years many fans mistakenly came to believe it was Burning Spear's debut album it wasn't, two earlier records were released by Studio One. It made an instant hero of Winston Rodney, and the album remains a cornerstone of the entire roots movement. Spear was accompanied by the Black Disciples, a baker's dozen of the island's best musicians, including bassists Robbie Shakespeare and Aston Barrett, guitarists Earl Chinna Smith and Tony Chin, and drummer Leroy Wallace. Sonia Pottinger, who has died aged 79, was one of Jamaica's most noteworthy music producers during the 1960s and 70s. In a competitive realm dominated by men, she excelled through an individualised approach to record production that was bolstered by her keen business acumen, and leaves a back catalogue of outstanding quality. The youngest of three children, she was born Sonia Durrant in Leith Hall, Jamaica, and moved to the capital, Kingston, at a young age to attend St George's girls school
