Maya Angelou, an African-American writer who is best known for her seven autobiographies, was also a prolific and successful poet. She has been called the black woman's poet laureate, and her poems have been called the anthems of African Americans. Angelou studied and began writing poetry at a young age, and used poetry and other great literature to cope with trauma, as she described in her first and most well-known autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. The reissue includes the original liner notes by James Baldwin, plus new notes from Robin Marcus Vazquez and Elizabeth Pavone. Maya Angelou formerly known as Marguerite Ann Johnson, was an African American poet, writer, dancer, singer and actor. She changed her name following the recommendation of her managers when she was a dancer from 'Marguerite Johnson' or 'Rita' to 'Maya Angelou'. She was also increasingly successful as a singer and dancer and toured Europe from 1954 to 1955 with Porgy and Bess. She has traveled a lot and she used her time in each country to acquire language skills. She speaks English, French, Spanish, Italian and Arabic. As a dancer she also participated in the worl. In May, we mourned the passing of the phenomenal woman Maya Angelou at the age of 86, but that hasnt stopped her powerful legacy from living on. As the first posthumous release, her estate has released an album titled Caged Bird Songs. It features the artist reciting her own poetry but with the instrumental backdrop of original hip-hop beats, a concept imagined in 2007 by music producer Shawn Rivera of Az Yet. Before her passing, she signed off on the unique project and we finally get to hear it The title is a play off her magnum opus and autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, publ.
