The Derby Stakes, officially the Investec Derby, popularly known as the Derby is a Group 1 flat horse race in England open to three-year-old colts and fillies. It is run at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey over a distance of one mile, four furlongs and 6 yards 2,420 metres, usually on the first Saturday of June each year. The 2020 Epsom Derby was the 241st annual running of the Derby horse race and took place at Epsom Downs Racecourse on 4 July 2020. The race was sponsored by Investec. It was originally scheduled to take place at on 6 June 2020, but was postponed until later in the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually rescheduled to take place on 4 July 2020. The winner was the Coolmore Stud's chestnut colt Serpentine, ridden by Emmet McNamara and trained at Ballydoyle in Ireland by Aidan O'Brien, who. He was twice British Champion Amateur Jump Jockey, before becoming a celebrated journalist and recognisable racing personality both on television and through his charitable work for the Injured Jockeys Fund, which he helped establish. He has been described as quite possibly the outstanding. The Epsom Derby is the second leg of the Triple Crown as it comes after the 2000 Guineas and before the St Leger. The last horse to achieve the Triple Crown feat was Njinsky in 1970. Camelot went close to matching that achievement in 2012 but he could only finish second in the third leg at Doncaster over 1m6f. It is thought that the Derby was named in honour of the 12th Earl of Derby. He actually scored in the contest in 1784 as he owned the winner that year, Sir Peter Teazle. Robert Robson, John Porter and Fred Darling have all trained seven winning horses in the Derby. Robson did so in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1204 a new charter gave the people of Derby the right to rule themselves. They were allowed to elect 2 bailiffs who ran the town. While there, Clark attended the Epsom Derby in England, a well-known horse race run since 1780, and also fraternized with the French Jockey Club, a group that developed another popular horse race, the Grand Prix de Paris Longchamps. Clark was inspired by his travels and experiences, and, upon his return, was determined to create a spectacle horse racing event in the States. That said, the history of the Epsom Derby is fascinating and there is much here for racing fans to enjoy, even those who don't care about the bloodlines.
