Baaba Maal's first album for the upstart Palm Pictures label, Nomad Soul goes through all of the usual motions for a Maal album, which is at the same time wonderful and frustrating: frustrating given the extraordinary musical wealth of Senegal's traditional forms that is overlooked, but wonderful given the remarkable directions that artists such as Maal have taken with their newer, slicker productions. The basic texture of the album is almost a constant, rarely moving away from a relatively soft vocal track backed by a number of guitars and light percussion. This is music made for th. Nomad Soul. Souvenir 2. On Nomad Soul Baaba Maal has stayed true to his Fulani herdsman roots, singing as he travels and working with the best of those he meets along the way. On his seventh U. release, you will find collaborations with ambient pioneers Brian Eno and Jon Hassell, Celtic influences with Irish singers The Screaming Orphans, and a duet with reggae star Luciano. Baaba's last album, 1995's Firin'In Fouta was a landmark recording in the Afro-Pop genre. Nomad Soul is a logical progression that pushes the hybrid aspects of his style further. Baaba describes the new album as, A mix between my traditional food and the food the world gives me. Baaba Maal born 12 November 1953 is a Senegalese singer and guitarist born in Podor, on the Senegal River. In addition to acoustic guitar, he also plays percussion. He has released several albums, both for independent and major labels. In July 2003, he was made a UNDP Youth Emissary. Maal sings primarily in Pulaar and promotes the traditions of the Pulaar-speaking people, who live on either side of the Senegal River in the ancient Senegalese kingdom of Futa Tooro
